Tooling decisions affect casting quality, machining allowance, sample timing, and production cost. This is why tooling review should happen before a mold, pattern, or production tool is made.

What We Review Before Tooling

What Buyers Should Confirm Before Tooling

Casting tooling should not start from part weight alone. Before a pattern, mold, die, fixture, or core box is ordered, the drawing should be reviewed around parting line, draft angle, shrinkage, machining allowance, wall thickness, ribs, bosses, and inspection datums.

  • Confirm the casting process before tooling cost is fixed.
  • Mark machined faces, bearing seats, holes, threads, and sealing surfaces on the drawing.
  • Review whether a prototype route or soft tooling is needed before production tooling.
  • Define sample approval criteria, including dimensions, material, surface condition, and machining results.

Common Tooling Risks We Review

Tooling risk usually appears later as sample correction cost, machining difficulty, or unstable production. TORICH Casting reviews these points before quotation so the buyer can compare tooling plans more clearly.

  • Parting line risk: visible surfaces, sealing faces, and machining datums should not be placed in a difficult split area without review.
  • Machining allowance risk: allowance that is too small may expose casting variation; allowance that is too large increases machining time and cost.
  • Core and cavity risk: internal cavities, ports, and ribs need practical core support and cleaning access.
  • Sample correction risk: buyers should confirm how tooling changes will be handled after first article inspection.

Tooling RFQ Checklist

For a useful tooling quotation, send the 2D drawing, 3D model, target material, estimated annual quantity, machined areas, surface finish notes, inspection requirements, and any expected sample approval standard.
