Quality Control for Custom Cast Parts

For overseas buyers, quality is not only a certificate. The real question is whether the supplier understands the drawing, controls the functional surfaces, checks the machined areas, and ships parts that can be assembled without sorting or rework.

ISO9001 and TS16949 can be used for project communication when required. But the stronger quality work starts before quoting: drawing review, material confirmation, process route, machining allowance, and inspection scope.

What Buyers Usually Worry About

Critical dimensions are missed

A drawing may have many dimensions, but only some decide assembly. Mounting faces, hole positions, threads, bearing seats, flatness, and sealing areas need early attention.

Casting defects become functional problems

Porosity, shrinkage, deformation, flash, burrs, or poor surface cleaning can matter more when the part has pressure, sealing, or visible requirements.

Machining is planned too late

If datum surfaces and machining allowance are not considered during casting review, the final CNC work may expose risk in holes, bores, threads, or flat faces.

Documents are added after production

Material reports, dimensional reports, CMM, X-ray, pressure or leakage testing, and third-party inspection should be confirmed before production when needed.

How We Review Quality Before Quoting

  • Drawing review: revision, key dimensions, functional surfaces, tolerances, roughness, threaded holes, sealing faces, and assembly notes.
  • Material and process check: whether the selected material fits the casting process, part structure, machining route, and working environment.
  • Casting risk review: wall thickness, ribs, bosses, shrinkage areas, deformation risk, flash, burrs, and surface condition.
  • CNC machining review: datum surfaces, machining allowance, holes, threads, bearing seats, flatness, sealing faces, and inspection access.
  • Inspection scope: visual checks, dimensions, material documents, surface treatment confirmation, packing checks, and third-party testing if required.

What to Confirm with the RFQ

  • Drawing revision and any critical-to-function dimensions.
  • Material grade, required standard, and whether certificates are needed.
  • Machined surfaces, threaded holes, sealing faces, pressure areas, and roughness notes.
  • Required reports such as material report, dimensional report, CMM, X-ray, pressure or leakage test, or third-party inspection.
  • Packing requirements for machined, coated, heavy, or visible parts.

Inspection Points Buyers Should Define Early

Quality control for cast parts works best when inspection expectations are defined before production. For CNC-machined cast components, the casting route and machining route should be reviewed together because final assembly dimensions often depend on both steps.

  • Material grade and report requirements.
  • Critical dimensions, datum surfaces, hole positions, threads, and flatness.
  • Machined sealing faces, bearing seats, and mounting faces.
  • Surface defects that are acceptable or not acceptable for the application.
  • Pressure, leakage, or functional checks when the part is used in fluid equipment.

Documents That Can Be Prepared for Export Orders

Depending on the drawing and purchase requirement, inspection support may include dimensional reports, material certificates, surface treatment records, machining inspection notes, packing photos, and third-party inspection coordination.

  • Which dimensions are critical to assembly?
  • Which surfaces must be CNC machined after casting?
  • Is a first article report required before batch production?
  • Are there pressure, leakage, balance, or coating requirements?
  • Should inspection documents be supplied with each shipment or only with samples?
